British Ferret MK1 / 2 Ferret
The vehicle has a trough welded together from armor plates in a thickness of approximately ten to 18 millimeters. However, the motor cover is only about four millimeters in thickness. The installation of the engine, gearbox, drive and shafts inside the ferret makes it quite loud in the vehicle. The Ferret has all-wheel drive and tires with run-flat properties ( "run flat"). At the front are six throwing jugs (on each side three) of a nebulizer throwing system. The fuel tank holds about 100 liters of gasoline and is installed between the commanding place and the engine compartment. The fuel consumption on the road is around 30 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers. The gearbox is a five speed gearbox, the clutch is a fluid clutch. The distributor distributes the force evenly on each side. The front and rear wheels of one side are connected to each other without a differential gear. Therefore, tensions in the drive train can occur during operation on the road. The direction of travel is selected via a reversing gearbox so that the five gears are available both in the forward and reverse directions. The maximum speed is 93 km / h
As a weapon, various machine guns introduced into the British armed forces were available. Thus the caliber .30 Browning MG, the Bren and later the GPMG was used. The crew had STEN and sterling machine guns, later also the SA80-Sturmgewehr. In various variants, armored missiles were installed. Among other things, the Vigilant and the Swingfire were used here.
The electrical wiring system has a voltage of 24 V DC. The DC motors installed at the beginning produced a maximum current of 25 amperes. In order to avoid a further reduction in the already low idle performance, the Ferrets with DC motor have an automatically changing gearbox for the alternator. At first, the Ferrets were equipped with VHF radios of the "Larkspur" system, but most of them were upgraded to the then modern "Clansman" in the 1970s. The ferret has a standard intercom system, so the driver and the commander can communicate.
